LCD vs Plasma - Which Is Better

Lets say your in a dark room and you have a LCD and Plasma HDTV side by side, which is better? Plasma! BUT that not the whole story, did you noticed I said “dark room”? How you watch and use your HDTV will determine weather LCD or Plasma is right for YOU.

Plasma Advantages

  • Superior contrast ratios and black levels
  • Exceptional color reproduction
  • Superb viewing angle with no real loss of color or contrast
  • Excellent life expectancy

Plasma Disadvantages

  • Stockier than LCDs by a large margin, barring some practical technical advancements
  • Kind of heavy
  • Subject to screen burn-in (newer models compensate with various screen-saving methods)
  • Lower real peak brightness
  • Hard to see in a bright room
  • Consume a lot of power compared to LCD

Note: Extinction ( think Bata tapes, and HD DVD’s)?

Pioneer announced they are pulling out of the plasma panel manufacturing business and taking on LCD panels from Sharp. The liquid crystal display manufacturing process is getting better, more manufacturing plants open up every year to turn out increasingly more panels and performance is progressively getting better. Add to that the lower cost of manufacturing and additional technologies coming on board and you have a difficult road ahead for plasma.

LCD Display Advantages

  • Good color reproduction and improving contrast
  • Very thin, getting thinner
  • Relatively lightweight with flexible mounting options
  • Perfect sharpness at native resolution
  • Excellent longevity
  • Among the brightest direct view displays
  • No screen burn-in effect
  • Silent with no moving parts or fans
  • Greener - low power consumption ($$$)

LCD Display Disadvantages

  • Grainy effect on smaller mobile displays
  • Harder to see from a side view (this is improving with newer models)
  • Very difficult to produce deep blacks (LED backlighting improving this)

Note: LCD’s are not yet the best for black levels, but they are getting better due to LED backlighting and the “blur” effect, where the pixels cannot refresh fast enough for the screen motion, is all but extinct in newer 120Hz models.
